Liu Fei

Liu Fei (born in1964, Nan Jing). In his series of paintings, Liu Fei blends stylesand expressions of different time periods. All the girls in his pictures are dressed in traditional student's clothes from China of the 1930s, yet with their facial expressions, shaved scalps and wide-mouthed laughs they betray an entirely different outlook on life. In the same way, their scarlet lips stand out against the otherwise black and white colorings of the pictures. The artist explains that it was in the 1920s and '30s that Chinese women in high numbers began to embrace modern ideas and strive towards a new life of freedom.
